Research consultancy and evaluation service

Who we are

The Institute for Volunteering Research was established in 1997 to develop knowledge and understanding of volunteering, with particular relevance to policy and practice. We are an initiative of Volunteering England and the Centre for Institutional Studies at the University of East London.

What we do

We specialise in undertaking research and evaluation with volunteer-involving

organisations, which operate in the private, public and voluntary sectors in the UK and internationally. Our team of experienced researchers and associates will help develop the best strategies to answer your questions. Each research project is individually tailored to meet the needs of the client.

Our activities include:

  • Action research
  • Focus groups
  • Interviews
  • Literature reviews
  • Organisational consultancy
  • Programme evaluation
  • Questionnaire design
  • Research reviews
  • Strategic research
  • Surveys

How we can help your organisation

If you have ever wondered…

  • Who volunteers?
  • Why do people volunteer?
  • What motivates people to volunteer?
  • How can our organisation attract volunteers?
  • How can we measure the value of our volunteers?
  • Do our volunteers reflect the local community?
  • Do we manage our volunteers in the most appropriate way?

The team at IVR can help you to find answers to these and many other questions.

e-mail: Instvolres@aol.com or telephone 0845 305 6979 for more information or to discuss fees.

What our clients say

“We were very impressed with the professionalism of the Institute and the helpful information the team were able to give us. The Institute’s work was different from that of other organisations we visited, and it really helped to give us a fuller picture of British volunteering.”
Russian visitors from Povolzhe (an NGO resource centre in Samara) on a visit organised by the BEARR Trust

“IVR showed a professionalism and expertise that helped us move forward from our in-house employee volunteering evaluation to conduct more rigorous research, measuring impacts on a number of different stakeholders. The findings and recommendations of this independent study will help inform the development of our volunteering programme.”
